Those changes sound awesome...I mean flickering fire and moving water is just brilliant.

I lost my save file and second set of notes when I reinstalled Windows after upgrading my motherboard/CPU so I'll have to start again. Sad

Its all good dude. Glad that you liked the ideas though. The game is a few improvements beyond what I sent you last (which I will be rectifying with a new patch soon)

So,

I hadn't posted in awhile, so I thought I would share some more updates. First and foremost, the graphics alterations are getting into a "nit pick" phase, meaning I'm happy, but certain things can still use some changing IMO. Second, I've officially decided to have an "open beta" for anyone who wants to try the game before I put out the official v. 1.0 patch on jce3000Gt's wonderful site. Third, I'm actually taking a basic program development class right now, so I hopefully will learn enough to do the small ASM changes that I want to include.

Anyways, including some various screenshots of some new changes.

Mirage Tower

(I like this one because it gives that "scope" of being high above the clouds and adds some depth to the image :P)

Tower of Ordeals

[Image: Temple%20of%20Ordeals_zpshykpzphj.png][/UR

Enemy Alterations

[Image: Guardians%20and%20Sentries_zps3qibhudy.png]

Inventory Changes

[Image: Final%20Fantasy%20Reconstructed%20Alpha-...ggfd1i.png]

So anyways, in order of pics as best I can:

I decided to change the colors of the Mirage Tower to reflect the fact that it is a "brown stone" tower on the overworld. While it was cool to try to replicate the interiors of the Giant and Tower of Babil in the original color scheme, I liked the idea that the walls are actually brown and it is the technology within the Tower itself that makes it a "mirage"

I changed the Castle of Ordeals to the Tower of Ordeals, originally changed to a Temple. I used a combination of a number of different tiles that I found in a bunch of different games (mostly Famicom titles) and came up with an original looking tower. I figured that was a better representation of a "cave of trials" vibe inspired by Empire Strikes Back, which was what I was going for there.

I also found a few interesting RPG enemy sprite tiles in some of those games, and I wanted to add another robot enemy or two in the later parts of the game to reflect the Leifen influence in the Sunken Shrine and the Mirage Tower/Air Palace. Thought those worked pretty well. I think I'm going to use my original idea for those enemies as the new Vampire/Wiz Vampire enemies actually.

And last, I made some alterations to the inventory layout and updated some of the icons. I'm still not completely happy with how everything looks, but I'm more satisfied than I was at first.

So...
The game is really starting to look like I wanted it to, which is basically Final Fantasy 3.5. Going through the game it is definitely on par IMO with its later SNES counterparts, but it still has that classic 8-bit Final Fantasy at its core. I've found myself in the later stages of the project just going into different areas and having to remember that I made those changes, because the locations look like I always envisioned them in my 8-10 year old brain back in the day. This has really been a labor of love, so I look forward to hearing what people think of the game to see if you all like it, which is all I really want now, for other people to rekindle their love of the original Final Fantasy series.

And finally, I'm going to put together a "trailer video" for the game's official v.1 release (during this year's xmas holiday FINALLY), so if anyone would like to have their comments included in the trailer video, please let me know that it is "ok to print" kind of deal. I'm going to use the quotation and credit the author with either their real name or SN, just let me know your preference.

RE: Final Fantasy Reconstructed project
Ok. So the time of the "open beta" has finally arrived. Hopefully this link works:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7fx708bjy8z0bq...D.ips?dl=0

Anyway, had a few things come up, and also wanted to make a few more improvements before I opened up the beta process for everyone to enjoy. This is still the "proof of concept" version of the game, but its about 90% complete IMO. I still have to work on the script a little bit, but the graphics are pretty much done. I've had a lot of "life" situations come up recently, so rather than pushing back the open beta trials, I'm putting this out in order to get feedback and work from there. I really hope that everyone else will enjoy the game as much as I have.

2 things to remember, I used the Final Fantasy (U) [!] version of the rom to make the patch, so I can't guarantee it will work correctly with other versions (and we did experience problems before when patching to other versions, so if you use another rom image do so at your own risk), and second, I have NOT put in an NPC to direct you to see Princess Sarah before you leave Coneria, so it is possible not to get the Lute in the beginning of the game if you don't go to her room. Personally, I would approach this game like you would any other RPG that you've never played before. The game is roughly still the same, but there are a few changes that were made, additional rooms, a new town, new cave, new bonus dungeon, etc. So look around, explore, talk to everyone. If you get stuck, feel free to post in this thread or pm me. I hope everyone enjoys what I've come up with and I look forward to any and all feedback about what you like and what you don't. The official v 1.0 will be out by the Christmas holidays and hopefully by then I'll have worked out my ASM coding issues. Thank you to all of my beta testers and to Disch for helping me get as far as I have. I could not have done this without all of you.

Enjoy.

Oh wait, yeah, I think there might have been a teensy bit of progress since I last posted. Have a website now btw, so check out if you haven't already seen that somewhere in your travels. Guess I'll give some "updates" if you're so inclined (totally joking and 'hamming it up' there bro)

So yeah, none of what I originally was going to post is current, so for the moment check out what the game looked like a few weeks ago (and only looks better now if I say so myself, and I most certainly DO).

Open Beta v 2.0 is about to come out, I totally revamped the colors within the different shops today, have revised in some way, shape, or form almost 1/3 of the total dialogue/script in the game, actually have gotten pretty good at hex editing, and have a sound composer who has agreed to help. And um, 2 entirely new dungeons, 1 brand new town for the Oasis based off of Kaipo from FFIV, references to Dragon Quest, a TOTALLY expanded narrative that really makes sense now... And so much more I can't even remember it all. Oh yeah,
EVERY SINGLE AREA TILE IS DIFFERENT!!!

In case you can't tell, I'm UBER excited at this point. I hope you didn't get too far with beta v1.0 because I changed SO much after the LetsPlay series that its almost a brand new game AGAIN!! Will post an update to the thread soon. Was working on computer and saw this reply come through, so I stopped to keep active here too. I don't go on RHDN much any more, so I'm just staying to social media primarily. Hope all is well with you and yours bro.

Wow an epic update to shut me up. LOL I'm digging the changes! Any ideas what you're planning on the sound/music? Also for those like me who are rather partial to the original music (nostalgia and all) will you offer patches with and without the new music? I had to do the same thing with MQ Reborn since so many people complained that I took out the original music. Sad

I look forward to playing the latest beta. I've modded one of my
original XBOXes to play emulators so I can play them downstairs on our larger HDTV. Grin

HELL YEAH!!! I played a modded X-box like that when I was in college, so very cool. You will definitely like the updates I think. I actually have changed the ToF in both past and future, but I might change the "past" version back. I've also put in 4 new areas now; The Pravoka Lighthouse (home of the Pirates, 2 floors, 1 with a 'dead-end' and a few treasures, helps to build up the party before the ocean and paces the game better), The Ancient Library (where the Sages and Dr. Unne will be to consolidate Leifenish info and offer the players a more central place to get direction if they get lost), the village of Kaipo (based heavily off of the village in 4 since it was the only "desert village" I could really find that I liked from the series, and the Crystal Ruins (which is my contribution), not to mention the Temple of Ordeals is completely different, and entering Coneria Castle now is just EPIC!!! It looks different than even in the video now, though I actually haven't taken recent screenshots. Got a few more tweaks to do, and have to fix the Crystal Ruins layout, but I'm stoked.

As for the music, we're probably going to do 2 versions; 1 with the vanilla music since I was asked to do that version specifically, and then another with added tracks, arranged tracks, and maybe even an original composition or 2 from my composer/arranger. Spooniest and I have been collaborating a lot recently, and he offered to help since he wanted to do 8-bit versions of some SquEnix tunes, not just Final Fantasy. He's a pretty accomplished musician, so I'm happy to have him on board. Gonna include a few images for some of the "new areas", and I'll come back and post some more later if I have the time today. Glad you're still interested. Have over 200 followers for the Facebook page, which I think is pretty good for an obscure rom hack. :-)

So that's an HONESTLY current look at some of the areas that aren't going to change much more, one new town (based off another) and one completely new early game dungeon. I added Kaipo as a nod to Final Fantasy IV, and I couldn't think of any other towns in the games that were located in a desert. Thought about taking a name from Dragon Quest since there are a few nods to that series sprinkled in Reconstructed as well. The Pravoka Lighthouse in-game is referenced as "haunted" by a frightened townsperson, and I gave the Town a "Mayor" (a shout out to my good buddy Spooniest) who sends the players in search of Bikke to end the raids upon the town. The Mayor is actually the one who offers the ship, but I couldn't figure out how to move the chain of events from Bikke event (fight), text, Mayor gives ship. So right now the player still talks to Bikke after the fight, he grumbles about losing, and the ship appears outside of Pravoka without talking to the Mayor. I did give him additional dialogue though when you talk to him after "winning" his ship. The additional dungeon actually helps with not having to grind so much when arriving in the land of the elves and going to the Marsh Cave. I also put a good amount of gold and treasure there, which helps offset buying equipment and spells after sailing around. It helps balance the game a lot more IMO. Beta version 2.0 will be out by Month's end if I can help it, which will have the completed dialogue and script alterations. Look forward to any and all comments. Thanks for the continued interest and support. Cheers!:

Duke

That's been the unofficial title card for quite awhile now, though my buddy who does graphic design is working on a Hyperspin homepage and custom graphics for the game, so hopefully sometime soon I'll have something more original to attract interest. We're going to re-do the original NES strategy guide, can't remember if I mentioned that in an earlier post, and include some of the aspects of the Brady Games Guides. I've actually been looking a lot at the DQ3 and DQ8 books

RE: Final Fantasy Reconstructed project
Hi Everybody!!!

I do apologize for neglecting the updates past the Facebook page. Photobucket stopped allowing third-party sharing (I think that's what it said), so I lost the ability to share pictures in the updates. I've been trying to figure out how to link images from my website into the forum pages, but then created an issue with the website, which spiraled etc. The game is in beta v3.2 at this point and I'm closing in on the finalized version of the beta visually and dialogue wise. Open Beta 3.2 is finalized, so here is a link to that for those who are interested.

Open Beta v3.2

I've also taken the time to work on the Explorer's Guide (Game manual). So far I think I've got around 20 completed pages (including the cover, interior, ToC etc.) I've been including updated versions of the manual in the beta zip file, but for those who are interested in just looking at the manual itself, you can find that here:

Explorers Guide

So far I've altered over 1/3 of the game's script, expanding the story and trying to tie things together. I've also added a new Lighthouse dungeon West of Pravoka where Bikke and the Pirates are holed up, 2 new towns; one by the Dwarf Cave and 1 West of Onrac where the Caravan was originally; and a new location I've called the Ancient Library where Dr. Unne, Lukahn, and the Sages are gathered which is North of Crescent Lake.

Haven't been able to start working on ASM work yet since I'm trying to get all of the visuals completed first. If anyone would like to volunteer their services to help with the ASM work, I am willing to pay for help at this point. Especially since learning NES programming language doesn't seem like it will be very helpful in the future unless I start programming retro NES games. Once I figure out a better way to share images, I'll try to come and post some visual updates. For those who are interested, please check out the Facebook page for the latest updates

Final Fantasy Reconstructed Facebook

or the game's official website

Final Fantasy Reconstructed Home Page

I need to do some work with the website, which I think I will start on tonight since my image links are probably dead. Thank you all for the continued interest and support.

Ironically, the pictures still show up fine on my website. Maybe that somehow doesn't count as "3rd party hosting"?? I dunno. I'll try and check out imgur though because I would like to be able to put pics in the thread. I sent you an email last night with the latest version of the game and the work-in-progress game manual too, so hopefully you've had a chance to check those out. I'm definitely eager to hear what you think of the current version considering you've been there since literally "Day 1". And if you know of anybody who might be able to help with the limited ASM changes I want to make that would be a Godsend at this point. Hope ya have a great weekend bro!!

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly, the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest... is silence...

Haven't had a chance to check out the new version. My work week is friday through monday so those days are usually full. I'll definitely check it out on monday night or tuesday. :) As for ASM help, if you haven't yet I would register over on slickproductions and check to see if those guys, including Lenophis can point you in the right direction. The URL is below. Tell 'em JCE said hello. Grin

Oh, and if the images aren't too large in filesize I can host them. RAR them all up and email that to me and I'll upload them.
