Top 5 topic: #5 -- Arcade
Sorry guys! Work kicked my ass this week.

Top 5 arcade!

--------------------

In no particular order...

1. Street Fighter II
2. Galaxian
3. NBA Jam
4. Sega Rally Championship
5. Cruisin' USA

There are a ton more but these probably took most of my quarters.

RE: Weekly Top 5 topic: Week 5 -- Arcade
Alrighty then, it's time for my Top 5 Arcade Games!

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
2. Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder
3. Street Fighter II
4. Virtua Fighter
5. Mortal Kombat

Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder was the arcade exclusive and true sequel (Golden Axe sequels on Genesis were entirely different) to the original Golden Axe. It was a 32-bit game with lots of parallax scrolling and 3-D rolling boulders coming from the background crashing into the screen! Oh goodness, it was such a fun game with coop.

TMNT Arcade game was fantastic. It was the hallmark of what an arcade game was about. The graphics, sound, gameplay, 4-player coop...it had everything. I believe my 5th Grade class went on a field trip to North Carolina when I was kid. We stopped by the mall eventually. Of course, we went to the arcades to play. But to our surprise, it was the release day for TMNT. They just brought the arcade unit into the room. So, we sat around waiting for them to plug in the game. When they did, we wanted to camp out there! Alas, we only had 2 hours to play it. Still, it was a great experience.

Mortal Kombat really surprised me when I first saw it. Though we don't care too much for the game these days. But as a kid, when I first saw the digitized actors fighting it out on the screen, I thought the graphics were so realistic, it's memorizing. Then, I saw the extreme violence called Fatalities. Phew, that blew my mind. Though I wasn't very good at it, Mortal Kombat still brought fighting games to a new level that is different from Street Fighter II.

I don't have to say too much about Street Fighter II. It is the best fighting game of all time. There is nothing wrong with it but pure fighting goodness. To this day, it is the first fighting game that created true fans.

Virtua Fighter looked ugly and a decent fighting game. But what made it so special was its position as the first true 3-D fighting game. Suddenly, the entire fighting arena changed perspective. So your strategy is entirely different. I'm a pretty big fan of Virtua Fighter. I own both versions of it on the Sega Saturn (original version and polygonal shaded), as well as its sequel. I plan to own the entire series.

OMG Phil, I hated Virtua Fighter. LOL! I definitely was the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat thing, I thought VF was too slow and the way you performed moves just seems wonky and imprecise. And slow as well. Street Fighter II was FAST and Mortal Kombat was also fast though the characters in the original game weren't as fast as in MKII.

I almost put TMNT on that list but the games on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th slot took more quarters from me. :)

Yeah, Virtua Fighter was slow, but the fighting styles and moves were realistic. There were a lot of skill involved with that game. I got quite good with it once I was able to practice at home on the Saturn. Each character had its own very specific style from real life. My best characters were Pai & Lau Chan (Kung Fu) and the ninja, which was Kage (Ninjutsu). I'm a Martial Artist myself. I've been trained in Taekwondo (Korean Karate), Kung Fu (4 different sub-styles[Mantis, Dragon, Tiger, & Monkey]), and Sho Ba Con (Japanese Karate). So, I guess it's natural for me to transfer my abilities to a video game. Hehe.

In Virtua Fighter 2, I liked Shun Di (Drunken Kung Fu) and Lion (Praying Mantis Kung Fu). VF 2 was a lot better in every way, especially graphics and play control. I put in the first Virtua Fighter as part of the Top 5, since it pioneered the genre.

That's interesting to hear about your martial arts skills. I did Taekwondo in my early teens but my parents stopped those lessons a year or so later and that was upsetting. Is love to get back in to it once I lose this extra weight gained after back surgery.
